What goes in each bin?

Wandsworth provides weekly collections for rubbish, mixed dry recycling and food waste. Most households use either clear sacks, black sacks, or communal bins depending on their property type.

Mixed Dry Recycling

Most homes use clear recycling sacks or orange-lidded communal recycling bins. Recycling is collected weekly.

  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays
  • Food tins and drink cans
  • Cartons (juice and soup cartons)

  • Soft plastic film and wrappers

General Rubbish (Refuse)

Rubbish is collected weekly in black sacks or shared refuse bins.

  • Plastic film and wrappers
  • Crisp packets
  • Nappies and sanitary products

Not Accepted

  • Electrical items
  • Batteries
  • Garden waste
  • Hazardous or chemical waste

Food Waste Collection

Food waste is collected weekly. Most households receive a small kitchen caddy and an outdoor caddy or use communal food waste bins.

Accepted

  • Raw and cooked food
  • Meat, fish and bones
  • Fruit and vegetable scraps
  • Pasta, rice, bread and dairy
  • Tea bags and coffee grounds

Not Accepted

  • Liquids such as oils or milk
  • Plastic coffee pods
  • Non-compostable liners or packaging
  • Foil or cling film

Garden Waste

Garden waste is not collected with normal household waste.

Residents must either:

  • Subscribe to the garden waste collection service
  • Compost at home
  • Take waste to a local recycling centre

Accepted: grass cuttings, leaves, prunings and small branches.

Flats & Communal Properties

Many flats use shared bins for recycling, rubbish and food waste.

Bin colours, sizes and placement arrangements may vary depending on the building, but the same rules apply for what can and cannot be put inside.

Small Electricals Collection

Wandsworth offers a weekly collection for small electrical items.

Residents can leave items such as kettles, toasters or hairdryers in a small open carrier bag next to their normal rubbish or recycling.

Collection Rules

Set-Out Rules

  • Waste must be placed out by 6:30am on the day of collection.
  • Waste can be placed out after 6:30pm the night before.
  • Sacks and bins must be clearly visible from the street and must not obstruct pavements or roads.

Bank Holidays

Most bin collections in Wandsworth run as normal on bank holidays.

Only Christmas Day and New Year’s Day usually affect the schedule. When they fall on a weekday, collections typically move to the next day for the remainder of that week.
